t seems that near field communications (NFC) are not a big enough deal for Apple yet.
Apple has supposedly disclosed in meetings with large mobile operators in the U.K. that NFC would not be making its way onto the next-generation iPhone model (be it the 4GS or iPhone 5), which is due later this year.
One of the anonymous inside sources has been quoted in The Independent saying, "The new iPhone will not have NFC, Apple told the operators it was concerned by the lack of a clear standard across the industry."
Given the pull that Apple has in the wireless market, many analysts feel that the introduction of NFC on an iPhone will mark the widespread adoption of the technology; as such, this decision to leave NFC out of the next iPhone model may mean that it won't proliferate in 2011.
"Nokia has talked about this for years and nothing happened," said Carolina Milanesi, an analyst at Gartner. "When Google and Apple talk about it, NFC will happen."

NFC technology involves a small chip being embedded into the handset, which, in turn, allows users to interact with other NFC chips. With this technology, people could do things like make credit card payments with a swipe of their phones.
While Apple may not think that the technology is widespread enough yet, it supposedly is working on its "own NFC proposition," which would link payments through iTunes. Even that technology, however, wouldn't be seen in a handset until next year.
